Would you drain the swamps?

Swamp areas around the Waikato River are alive with eel, birds, maanuka trees and harakeke (flax). When the Waikato River floods, these areas absorb the overflow. Rich in natural resources, unfortunately for military settlers these swamps made bad pasture, impossible for British agriculture.

Imagine you are a member of the colonial government, faced with the Piako Swamp Company’s proposal that the swamps be drained so that British agriculture can take place. Would you agree to the swamps being drained?
